In the past, Logica often had problems with the first five minutes of the second half. We would play as though in some dream world - half asleep. Oppositions would take advantage of this to drag themselves back into a game we had all but secured by half-time. The reason for this, obscured until now, can finally be revealed. It was due to the memorable half-time team talks given by this evening’s third nomination, Mr David Richmond.
Phrases such as "It’s a game of two halves" were not, to Skippy, meaningless cliches but rather splendid philosophical revelations which he was duty bound to share with us.
Skippy burst onto the scene for Logica playing in midfield and had an electric effect on the team down the right hand side. It was quickly discovered that it was a waste of a great talent to play him wide and he rapidly moved into the centre of midfield and from there, when the situation demanded it, into the centre of defence, In fact, in those three positions he has, at least for me provided three Logica FC defining performances.
I particularly remember a game he played in the centre of defence at The Scrubs against a team that I can’t remember. Something to do with Bayswater. They had at the time a tall, skilful and quick centre forward who was also full of himself. Skippy marked him completely out of the game playing alongside him I merely watched on in awe.
Lui after the first time he played with him said he was astonished at how good he was but also what a clean player he was. I had to laugh! Another defining memory is on the rare occasions when a player did manage to muscle past him was a quick tap on the ankles and down he went. This was followed shortly by Skippy trotting over to the player, picking him up and with a big Brummie Smile saying "Sorry mate, didn’t mean it!".
As well as a great talent Skippy never shouts or boasts about his ability. It may be, deep in his heart, that he believes that we do not appreciate him or that his talent is not as great as it actually is. Hopefully, this nomination this evening indicates our appreciation and recognition of this talent.
To you, the voters, I commend Mr David Richmond.
