One of the closest polls so far this season, the Knowledgeable Footballing Public spread their votes around no fewer than six of the players on show in the thrashing of Arab Boys. Simon Groom won himself one eighth of the votes polled after his debut goal for the club capped an excellent defensive display. His full-back partner Paul Mainwaring convinced a similar proportion of the electorate, as did Paul Banoub for an excellent hat-trick and Jon Clarke for a hat-trick of assists.
So close was the poll, that captain Dav Gautam and striker Mark Abbott could not be separated. A recount could only confirm that each had won exactly a quarter of the votes, and therefore this week's Man of the Match award must be shared by the two players. Gautam clearly earned his nomination with an all-encompassing midfield display combining creativity with great ball-winning tenacity. The reason for Abbott's popularity is less clear, and we can only conclude that his post-match creative excuses for not scoring in a 10-0 victory fooled a significant number of the electorate. That's democracy we suppose.
