Despite the defeat, the season at least had a happy ending for the football romantics amongst you. All through the campaign, it has been a case of 'always the bridesmaid, never the bride' for young Paul Mainwaring. In almost every MoM Poll, Paul has attracted votes from his colleagues for his consistently excellent performances at left-back, but never has he actually come out on top. Finally, however, Mainwaring has received his long overdue recognition with over half the e-ballot papers received containing a cross against the defender's name. After taking an early lead, Logica spent much of the remainder of the game fighting a rearguard action, and it was a testimony to Mainwaring's gallant defending and unflustered organisational skills that the team held out for so long. Sadly, even his defensive abilities could not combat Brown's irrepressible eye for goal.

Only three other players received votes. Dav Gautam, for an effective if unconventional use of the gloves, and Reevaldo, who was often Logica's sole attacking threat, were well worth the nod, but we can only assume that some small portion of the electorate felt for sorry for Abbott, whose second half groin injury could do little to disguise a moderate performance.
