It was another of Logica's famous Cup giant-killings and all twelve players were heroes. But the Knowledgeable Footballing Public had to choose just one player as their Man of the Match. A difficult choice, but once more the nominations prove that your average man in the street knows his onion bags.
An outstanding Captain's innings from the lad Mainwaring was deemed by nearly 10% of the electorate to be worthy of their precious vote . As well as turning in a superb defensive display, the captain's leadership proved inspirational as he urged every last ounce of effort from his charges as they hung on to a well-earned lead.
In front of the captain, Sandric Loriot orchestrated this famous victory from the middle of the park with a display of all round brilliance. Unflappable in possession, the Frenchman embarked on many a dribble that cut through the heart of the Worlds End rearguard, so much so in fact that the only way they could stop him was by some fairly brutal fouls. When Logica needed to ease the pressure by keeping the ball, Loriot was the man, and his desire to play the ball to feet proved infectious through all departments of the Logica team. He also played his part in winning the ball back, either via well timed tackles on the ground or his dominance in the air. A third of the voters viewed such an all round performance as the key to Logica's famous win.
Despite these brilliant individual displays, it was Logica's goalkeeper who wins this week's Man of the Match Award with a decisive 58% of the votes cast. It was Lee Pendleton's first game of the season, but there was no time to ease himself back into the swing of things. At the end of the first half he pulled off two miraculous saves - the first a finger-tip deflection past the post, the next a full length tip over the bar - to maintain Logica's ascendancy. His handling of a slippery ball throughout a morning of unremitting rain was faultless, and his back-peddling acrobatics to palm a deflected shot over the bar in the second half was probably the best of the lot. Even the goal he conceded saw him get a hand to a blistering shot. Most definitely a hero amongst heroes.
