After losing twice to Santos in recent league encounters, this Cup victory was as sweet as any of Logica's famous giantkillings down the years. The Supremo's visionary lulling tactics paid dividends, and the Knowledgable Footballing Public showed equal shrewdness in voting Manlio Trovato as the Man of the Match. Logica's Italian libero was the defensive rock on which this legendary victory was achieved, as he marked Racing's dangerous striker Smudger out of the match. With such success in fact, that the man who had caused so much damage in the 6-1 defeat the previous week was forced to indulge in some fairly physical retribution as his frustration grew.

Trovato's award is the more impressive considering that Logica's midfield foursome produced one of the finest displays of the footballing arts since Platini, Giresse, Tigana and Fernandez swept all before them during Euro84. Indeed Richard McWilliam's performance, which included a goal and an assist, ran the Italian close all the way to the finishing line, polling 33% of the votes to Trovato's 40%. Sandric Loriot also polled over 10% of the vote, a fitting tribute to the talented Frenchmen in what is likely to be his last Sunday morning appearance for the club. And a small proportion of the electorate clearly viewed the insprational part played by Jez Brown as a significant contribution to this fine win, even though he didn't actually enter the field of play.
