It was a team performance that had deserved more. Logica had taken on the First Division leaders South Wimbledon in the Cup quarter-final and given them a hell of a game. The whole team had given it 110%, but it had not just been the battling qualities and determination that had stood out. Logica had played some pretty good football too, with the result that they had created far more clear-cut chances than their higher league opponents. In the end though, Wimbledon took their chances when they came, and a glorious Cup run was over.

One man excelled and typified the entire team's performance on the day. Tough defending, non-stop running and tireless support to the attack saw Paul Mainwaring put in the kind of display for which the cliche 'Captain's example' was originally coined. One example is enough to demonstrate. Mainwaring intercepted a Wimbledon corner in his own box. Instead of hoofing clear, he picked out Abbott on half way, but then set off on a marauding sprint that enabled him to receive the ball from Taylor in the outside-right position! Unaffected by this gallop, he still showed the composure to slip a return pass to the Logica forward who shot just wide. The move of the season many reckoned.

Whilst this is undoubtedly a deserved individual award, the all round excellence of the team performance is mirrored by the spread of votes across no fewer than seven players. In second place was Jeff Hatton with 23% of the vote, and he along with Manlio Trovato (8%) played crucial parts when Logica refused to buckle under the initial onslaught. Groomo (8%) also turned in a heroic first half performance given his pre-match state. When Logica did start playing, it was the midfield who contributed most. Tim Wood (15%) in particular played a blinder, and his opening goal was the sweetest of strikes. Richard McWilliam and Reevaldo (both 8%) were both at the creative hub of most that Logica did in their opponents half. It's just a bit of tragedy that Logica couldn't turn their superiority into more goals, or they would now be anticipating a Cup semi-final in a week's time.
