It may have been an abysmal match, but one man stood out above the morass of mediocrity. It was only last week that our august organ had been bleating about what a travesty it was for defenders to be winning Man of the Match whilst letting in six goals. We stand by this rant, but note that whilst this week's clear winner is once again a member of the back four, Logica did at least manage to restrict South West Eighteen to just three goals.
We strongly suspect however that this was not the reason that Jeff Hatton got the nod this week. Whilst the Logica forwards were attempting to recalibrate their banjos in front of an unworried set of bovine backsides, and Logica's chances of winning were receding fast, it was the centre half who felt duty bound to lollop forward and rescue his team with a couple of moments of quality finishing. First he latched onto a Gautam slide-rule pass and coolly lobbed the Eighteen keeper with deadly accuracy. Then, after half time, he duly galloped up again on his white charger to nonchalantly notch Logica's second equaliser with a sublime back stick volley.
Hatton walked away with over 60% of the votes cast, and debutante keeper Richard Booth was the only other player to get into double figures in percentage terms. And very well deserved too, after a display of agility and organisational competence in extremely difficult conditions that was a major contribution to victory.
