It was a vital psychological boost to get a win under our belts after two good performances that had yielded just a point. The Supremo has not rested on his laurels, bringing in four new players to boost what was already rapidly approaching the best squad that most fans could remember. And Groom's judgement is clearly in tact as the two debutantes in the starting XI topped this week's MoM Poll.
Centre half Pete Chapman turned in an authorative display from the first minute to the 87th, when he was carried off in some pain after another superbly timed tackle had seen him come off worse. More than comfortable with the ball at his feet, he showed his quality early doors with a regal burst from the back. Although not the tallest of defenders, he won practically everything in the air, and also threw in a couple of heroic last-ditch blocks for good measure. There were also early signs of a good partnership with old-timer Jeff Hatton, whose own solid contribution earned him third place in this week's Poll. From a somewhat worrying rearguard vulnerability in the first two games, suddenly our defensive options look varied and strong.
Equally good news for the gaffer was the performance of Dave Robertson in the centre of the park. After many years trying to sign the skilful Scot, Groom finally managed to tempt the Leatherhead international out of bed on a Sunday morning. And the reasons for the gaffer's persistence were immediately clear, as Robertson showed immense skills against good opponents. Two blistering free kicks from distance were also a novelty from someone in a Logica shirt, and his willingness to share in the defensive hard graft were also not to be found wanting.
