It was a famous Cup upset that might even have had Roy of the Rovers raising an eyebrow. Injury-stricken Logica took on the First Division leaders and even had the temerity to take the lead. An equaliser just before half-time was followed by, first, the Cinderellian departure of Captain Reevaldo, and shortly afterwards the unfortunate dismissal of keeper Rob Sapwell. But the remaining ten men of Logica defended bravely, and then showed both technique and character to win through the penalty shoot-out.
As befits such an heroic rearguard action, it was the twin collossi of Manlio Trovato and Phill Hatton who continued battling neck and neck for this week's MoM Award. There was little to choose between the pair defensively, both strode like giants on the shoulders of the increasingly frustrated Notting Hill forwards. Aerial dominance, sublime tackling, determined chasing - the two centre halves did not stop for 120 minutes.
But the dramatic script finally cast Trovato as Roy Race. After his outstanding defensive watch, the Italian libero donned the gloves to pull off a series of saves, catches and crosses that kept the scores level through extra time. Having saved one penalty in the shoot-out, he strode up coolly to convert the third kick as Logica did a passable impression of a team of specialist spot-kickers. And with the tension of sudden death reaching fever pitch, it was Trovato who once again pulled off a penalty save to clinch Logica's place in Round Two.
