It seemed unfortunate that for such a tough game , Logica should start off with only ten men. Young had completely overlooked the start of British summertime, and as such turned up at Battersea with his boots in a paper bag tucked under his arm, one whole hour late, and completely unaware of the commotion his absence had caused. Despite this apparent disadvantage, arrived to find Logica 1-0 up. An excellent break by , standing in at right-back temporarily, resulted in a perfect square pass to who slotted home unerringly.

An unbelievable start for the second division under-dogs. finally took his place, and Logica's shape was restored with partnering up front in the unexplained absence of . The game took on a distinct pattern, with Cultural keeping possession for long periods but being restricted to long shots by a solid Logica defence, excellently marshalled by on one of his rare appearances. Logica had occasional breaks and looked dangerous each time. had two half-chances which were foiled by the exceedingly quick Cultural centre-backs. Towards the end of the half, a squared pass by saw brilliantly curl a vicious shot with the outside of his boot, which crashed aqainst the upright and back into play.

At half-time Logica felt comfortable against opposition from the premier leaque. The second half proqressed in much the same way as the first, although Cultural now began to look more dangerous. in goal made two excellent saves, and for one in particular from a close range glancing header the stout scouser reached a ball which few thought he could. It would take some shot to beat him, which is in fact what happened when the Cultural left-back hit an unstoppable first-time volley, after a corner had been headed clear.

Logica gradually came back into the game and started creating a few chances for themselves. They retook the lead when a brilliant cross by found at the far post unmarked. The slim striker made no mistake and scored another goal with his head. Shortly afterwards the roles were reversed with the captain crossing for , but this time the header was off target.

As the final whistle approached Logica had the qame well under control, and were looking forward to a semi-final place, when Cultural gained a disputed corner with just thirty seconds left. The danger seemed to have passed when the mis-hit corner trickled towards the near post. However the ball somehow managed to evade the two defenders and goalkeeper standing there, and a Cultural player gratefully tapped into an empty goal from one yard. The Cultural supporters invaded the pitch, whilst the Logica players looked around stunned. Seconds later the final whistle blew, and this tie meant that the group would almost certainly be decided on goal difference now.
