This match had been anticipated for many months. Both teams unbeaten in their respective divisions, but Venice having won every single game, and averaging about eight goals in each. Logica were without in goal, but luckily had an able replacement in . Venice turned out to be just about the best team Logica had played all season, and in a fast and hard-fought game, they proved to be the better side, although 5-1 certainly flattered them. It is perhaps no surprise that after their first season in the league, the powers that be have decided to move Venice into the first division which is clearly where they belong. This means that Logica, having won the second division title this year, will be in the same division next year, and will have a chance to avenge this defeat.
The game started evenly enough with chances at both ends. had a half chance but the Venice centre half was so quick to recover. Indeed, these was the best defence Logica had played against all season, very quick and very strong. Venice's main strength was that all ten outfield players looked very comfortable on the ball, and there was no weakness anywhere. Half an hour into the game, Logica took the lead. As the Venice defence pushed up to compress play, a quick through-ball found clear and on-side. As usual, the Scot beat the keeper clinically and Logica were ahead.
, playing in the centre of midfield, was having the proverbial blinder, tackling back superbly whilst lending weight to the attack. Unfortunately, shortly after scoring, he was caught in the face by the Venice centre-half and had the leave the field briefly to have the resultant cut attended to. It was no coincidence that Venice scored twice in his absence. The first was lucky as a wicked deflection took the ball past 's left, after he had already begun to dive to his right. The second goal came after a heavy spell of constant pressure. returned for the second half, but Logica seemed to have blown their chance when Venice scored almost immediately. tried to dribble out of his own penalty area when a big hoof was really required. He was robbed and the third goal inevitably resulted.
To Logica's credit, they never gave up and indeed now had their best spell of the match. For twenty minutes, Venice had to defend and Logica created some good chances, two in particular which should have been converted. First a good run and cross by found ten yards out unmarked, but his header was disappointingly high. Then had a shot saved by the keeper, but the rebound fell nicely back to him. He condfidently side-footed from a couple of yards and turned to celebrate, but somehow the keeper had reappeared from nowhere and grasped the ball before it could cross the line. A miraculous save.
This was Logica's last chance. A change of formation pushed defenders forward, but, as has happened too often before with such desperate measures, this merely left Logica vulnerable at the back and Venice scored two further goals. The final whistle brought a seemingly comfortable victory for Venice, but I for one am looking forward to playing them next year when I'm sure the scoreline will be much closer.
