Oh what joy! After a short break to watch the World Cup, a new football season was upon us once more. How we'd missed getting up at 8am on a Sunday morning and trooping all the way out to Wormwood Scrubs to play on a pitch which had been without water for longer than one of Siddy's goal droughts. The opposition was to be last season's all conquering Venice Utd, who had somewhat flatteringly chalked up a 5-1 cup victory over The Jades some months before. There were some new faces in the Logica side -the Brazilian import , and the rugged little midfielder -as well as the usual old faces (, ha ha). This was also a sad day as was to play his last ever game for Logica FC. The great goalkeeper, who was last season's Player Of The Season, and who was reckoned without exaggeration to be worth one to two goals per game, had decided to swap the green jersey for a duvet, surprisingly preferring Sunday morning lie-ins to diving around in the mud in sub-zero temperatures. Pah!
The game began with a sulking on the side-lines and the Logica defence in disarray. A corner was not cleared and Venice took an early lead. Fears of a trouncing were immediately removed as beat a poorly organised offside-trap to finish superbly. This goal gave Logica some confidence and soon it was 's captain's turn to spring the offside trap, round the keeper and score from an acute angle. Venice regained the initiative, scoring twice as half-time approached. However not to be outdone finished a good move down the right to enable Logica to reach half-time on level terms. A tactical switch then saw the by-now flouncing replace as Logica dispensed with the cautious five at the back formation.
The second half began with attacks at either end, and as the half progressed it seemed that either team could snatch a win. It took a moment of opportunisn to turn the tide in the Mighty Jades favour. A poor goal-kick fell straight to , who in typical no-nonsense fashion, wellied the ball straight back from whence it came, past a flailing keeper. Venice fought back but Logica resisted. The Brazilian in particular had an excellent game, involved in most attacks and defending stoutly. After had missed a good opportunity from an excellent first-time ball by , Logica extended their lead as once again beat an uncoordinated offside trap and finished with an excellent lob. Logica were now comfortably ahead, and as full-time approached they added a sixth. A clearence fell to the Scot, , some forty yards from goal, and the talented midfielder had no hesitation in hitting a brilliant first-time volley into the roof of the net. Most definitely an early contender for Goal Of The Season.
So Logica began the season with possibly one of the best results in their illustrious history. They returned with some satisfaction for after-match refreshments, where emotional scenes ensued as was presented with his Player Of Season award after his final game with the club.
