With the first signs of spring comes that old and fabled football tradition of 'double-headers'. Where two teams have yet to play each other twice, these fixtures are condensed into two one hour games played one after the other (the proverbial game of four halves), which certainly tests those reserves of fitness!
Logica FC are thus not very well equipped for this format of football. On the other hand, restricting each game to one hour could reasonably expect to minimise the margin of table-topping Holland Park's victories. This was not quite the way things turned out, although it wasn't far off. At least Logica had had the forethought to arm themselves with a full complement of players this time out. Twelve and a bit no less!!! The first game saw Logica fairly well-beaten as they struggled to refamiliarise themselves with the novelty of eleven-a-side football. Whilst they were not disgraced, they never really looked capable of winning the game despite scoring goals at important times.
A quite extraordinary first goal brought the scores level at 1-1, after Holland Park had scored early on. was having another excellent game, with his sure control and pin-point passing enabling Logica to maintain a little more possession. After an attack broke down, the ball was cleared only as far as the young Irishman on the left touchline. He got a little too much under his strike, and the ball ballooned skyward The Park keeper seemed favourite for the ball as it eventually returned to earth, but under a heavy challenge he miscalculated and the ball bounced cleanly, only being intercepted on it's second orbit by the roof of the net.
Logica spent much of the rest of the game defending. Individ- ually the back four played excellently, despite another new defensive combination. The ever-improving , and , still recovering from injury, coped with almost everything despite their lack of height. The full backs and harried their unfortunate opponents like terriers. In amongst this almost constant bombardment, brief glimpses of hope appeared in the guises of 's feet, either of which can play long and short passes with unerring accuracy. With 's bite and 's pace, things were not all lost even at 3-1 down.
The Jades' optimism was rewarded with an excellently worked goal. A superb ball from deep in his own half released . Rounding the keeper and tight on the by-line, the captain saw his fellow forward bearing in on goal. A low centre left to finish past a helpless defender on the line. At 3-2 Logica sensed a chance. But in the end the continual pressure by Holland Park was too much for the over-worked defence, and two goals were conceded before the end. A scoreline of 5-2 was perhaps a bit harsh on Logica, but they had an immediate opportunity to gain revenge.
