This last Sunday of the season for Logica brought another double-header as the league's fixture organisation degenerated into complete and utter chaos. Who in their right mind would start a forty club competition at the start of April with so many league and cup matches are still to be played?!?
However, am in no position to criticise organisation after this farrago amongst farragoes. Arriving early with the usual dread of finding out who had not turned up - one of our players, the opposition or the ref - I was completely unprepared to discover a quite novel absentee: the kit! Two kits clean, but at home. So a dramatic car chase ensued through early morning streets of South London to fetch the old grey kit (well suited to !) which was incomplete, and anything vaguely suitable from the laundry basket.
After such a dramatic start, the football which followed was comparatively dull. In typical fashion for this season, two players were badly injured in the first half of the first game. With no substitutes this looked to be a serious setback. Luckily though recovered to make his usual telling contribution, and battled bravely on to the last thirty minutes before the pain became too much.
Yet another defensive combination looked very sound, with returning after a long absence to partner . again played despite injury, but this time at full-back, further strengthening the rear-guard. As a result in goal had little to do. Unfortunately, neither did his opposite number.
Star turned out to be a very skillful team despite their lowly placing. Their excellent one touch football was well suited to the artificial surface. In the face of this, Logica struggled to create openings, although and 's accurate passing again looked the best bet. , playing up front for the first time in many moons, did not get much service, and began coming deeper to stay involved.
Not surprisingly a break through arrived via . It was a goal from the Arsenal textbook entitled 'Not Very Pretty But Effective'. A long hoof from was flicked on by and dived in bravely to just beat the keeper's fist to the bouncing ball.
The second half saw Logica under constant pressure for long periods although real scares were few. A header from a Star corner was miraculously headed off the line by with well beaten. In the end though an equaliser came, and it was almost an exact replica of the Logica goal. A long ball was headed on, leaving the Star forward to finish powerfully and unchallenged from 12 yards.
