A strong Logica line-up fancied their chances against a Eurocelts team whom we had beaten 6-4 in our previous game. Sadly, too many Easter Eggs took their toll, and a disjointed performance meant that we never really looked like winning, despite the final scoreline.
After being pinned back by some early pressure, Logica took the lead somewhat against the run of play. A good passing move down the left found Spence jinking past two defenders before looping a high cross to the far post. Wing-back Hoyland gained reward for supporting the attack as he nodded home between keeper and post. Straight from the kick-off, though, Celts were level as they marauded forward and finished with a strong shot. More disaster ensued as a well placed lob from an Eurocelts striker found Logica keeper Fleming slightly off his line and the score was 1-2. Logica rallied well and should really have been ahead at half time as first Abbott and then Richmond fluffed good chances for an equaliser.
An early goal after the break to Eurocelts seemed to be conclusive but Logica dug deep to claw back a second goal. Richmond played a superb through pass and Spence's finish of choice was an accurate lob. 2-3. The game began to get a bit scrappy, but predictably Logica conceded a sloppy fourth goal. A weak cross looked to be going out but Fleming and Trovato got their wires crossed and the ball was only half cleared to a Celts player who struck home gleefully.
Logica had little to lose now and tried hard to construct some threatening passing moves. Spence played Abbott in on goal but his side-footed shot was palmed away well by the keeper. Abbott returned the favour minutes later as he beat two men on the left and whipped in a cross which Spence dispatched with a clinical header for his second goal of the game.
However Logica didn't really threaten to get the equaliser and the match ended 4-3 to Eurocelts. Only Spence can take real pride from his performance, scoring twice and creating the other Logica goal. With a substantial lead in the Golden Boot stakes, Spence may also be a leading candidate for Player of the Season, and must now be fast approaching his prime as a footballer. Clearly the novelty of fatherhood has not affected his excellent form on the pitch this season.
Logica must now hope that bottom club Oakwood (see table below) do not drop out the league before the end of the season, as teams are apt to do after losing to Logica, or it will be an unwelcome double for Supremo Fleming. Our failure to field a team in the double-header against Aldwych, losing us 4 points which were well within our grasp, may yet cost us dear.
