After the elation of the last week's impressive win over title-chasing Red Star, it was back down to earth with a bump as a skeletal Logica squad fell limply to fourth placed Bald Eagles. Any lingering hopes of claiming that coveted fourth spot for our own evaporated after a 4-1 defeat that might have been far worse but for a combination of dogged defending from Logica and poor finishing from the home side.
There were, however, some extenuating facts. A midday kick-off meant that the game started at just the time that most Logica stars would normally be contemplating a Sunday afternoon siesta, and many felt reluctant to change their routine (including some who played). Further the club experienced a minor selection crisis that nearly saw the match forfeited on Thursday at which point only 8 players were available.
The skeletal nature of the squad was not solely down to the fact that had not consumed any solids for nearly 48 hours. Of last week's winning team, star men and had been whisked away on a surprise holiday weekend by their inconsiderate better halves, whilst the industrious midfield engine room that was and were unavailable due to scheduled maintenance. once more had a keeper conundrum as extended his winter break well into a third month, whilst legendary hole merchant had still not resurfaced following GongGate.
There was some better news for the gaffer. Last week's match winner - the inspirational turned up to play despite a niggling groin injury, and that reliable purveyor of quality to the masses, the Lag Network, had come up trumps again as agreed to help out. There was more good news when agreed to swap his front-line profligacy for a pair of gloves.
The first half found the Eagles in confident mood after their own impressive win over Spectraprint the week before. Logica saw little of the ball, and much of the game was played out in their half. But, as in the first game, the Bald men lacked a cutting edge, and in goal had relatively little to do given the gross imbalance in possession. He was forced to tidily tip one volley over the bar, and late in the half, a header from a corner smacked back off the same woodwork.
In between times some woeful shooting and well-timed tackles, especially from the impressive and , precluded further involvement from the erratic number one. That is until the Eagles swapped their elaborate build-up play for a more direct approach. A quick, long ball over the top caught the Logica back-line by surprise, and whilst froze in no-mans land wondering whether to advance or retreat, the ball was lofted over him and the home side were ahead [0-1].
Despite being starved of the ball, Logica in the shape of still managed to carve out a number of half chances. First, the experienced Scot pounced when a defender dallied to nick the ball away from the keeper, but his cross failed to find a yellow head. A clever free-kick from picked out a subtle blind-side run from , but a beautifully executed first time volley just flew the wrong side of the far post. The Lag striker was also on hand to intercept a poor clearance from the Bald keeper, but his attempt on the empty net from distance didn't quite have the legs. Nearly like the striker himself, who rolled down his sock at the interval to reveal a horrendous gash the length of his shin courtesy of the centre-half's studs.
If it was possible, Logica actually managed less possession in the second half. Although the visitors chased gamely, and in particular refusing to give up the battle, the Eagles' neat passing kept the ball for long periods, whilst Logica struggled to manage two consecutive passes on the rare occasions they won it back.
Whilst it was only 1-0 there was still a chance. made one point-blank save to keep a loose grip on this straw, and even managed an elaborate dummy to completely fool an onrushing attacker closing in on a low cross. But twenty minutes into the half, another raid down the right found an unmarked Eagle swooping to head home the accurate cross from six yards [0-2]. When another cross bounced over and was smashed home from close range, the game really was up [0-3].
Logica by this were time down to 10 men ( limping off with a recurrence of an ankle injury) and all they had to show for their second half exertions thus far was a good effort from . The right-midfielder reacted sharply to intercept a defender's pass, but having advanced to just inside the box, he was unlucky to see the Bald keeper save his well-struck shot. showed good potential on his debut: strong in the air, on the ground, and not afraid of a simple pass, his stamina was particularly noteworthy as he managed to last 90 minutes despite feeling a tad under the weather.
When the third goal went in, unselfishly agreed to take the gloves and let have a romp up front for the last 10 minutes. The twin Lag strike-force, with an impressive combined age of eighty, immediately clicked into the old groove. swivelled on half-way and threaded a through-ball between the two centre-halves perfectly into the path of the anticipating . The Scot burst clear, flicked the ball past one back-tracking defender but was unfortunate to see his shot blocked.
But almost immediately Logica did pull a goal back after some rare pressure had forced a throw near to the corner flag. The ball was worked into the box and only half cleared. collected and looked up before slipping a neat pass into the box for the waiting . The freed goal-minder turned and shot all in one movement, sending his shot low into the far corner before the keeper had time to react [1-3].
For a brief period, Logica gave as good as they got. But after a blistering volley had been miraculously headed off the line by the outstanding , the Bald Eagles reclaimed their three-goal advantage when another cross was bundled home from close range [1-4]. The last move of the game again saw feed , but the latter's quick snap-shot was too high and the final whistle was in truth a relief after what was overall a poor display.
