Logica quickly returned to their established home form, as they fell to an excellent Bald Eagles side still fighting tooth and nail with Broadway for the Second Division title. After last week's 1-0 win against Invictus had given his first points of the season at Fortress Stade, the 4-0 defeat to the Eagles was as comprehensive as the scoreline suggested.
The best entertainment for home fans was provided by himself, who had to be roused from his slumber just 45 minutes before the scheduled kick-off time after a set of elaborately networked alarm clocks failed to achieve their solitary aim. Worries about the absence of the team's inspirational leader were compounded when it finally emerged that had both Logica strips in his possession, thus breaking the golden rule of gafferdom which decrees that one should not put all one's kits in one basket.
As our leader embarked on a tyre-squealing car chase across South London, the ears of the Daily Star football correspondent in the press box were already pricking up at rumours circulating the home terrace about a six-in-the-bed romp. Sadly for 's reputation, such scandalous suggestions proved inaccurate, but his heroic chauffeur did manage to speed into the Stade's car park with just minutes to spare before the deadline upon which the game would have been awarded to the visitors. If we didn't know better, we might even speculate that the Supreme lie-in was a shrewdly planned tactical masterstroke to reduce the match to thirty-five minutes each way and increase Logica's chances of snatching something from a difficult game.
In hindsight, however, the game was effectively over within three minutes. A characteristically neat build-up freed the Eagles' striker in the inside-right channel. There was still much to do, but his unhesitatingly fierce strike into the top left-hand corner from the edge of the box left stand-in keeper helpless, and not even bothering to dive [0-1].
Missing a host of big name stars such as , , , , and , had once again been forced to draw on Logica's excellent Academy system and hand debuts to and . Last week's debutante keeper had been left with his arm in a sling due to severe ligament bruising, and, unable to tempt one of the club's many other keepers out from under their duvets, Logica's top-scorer selflessly volunteered to become the club's sixth glove-man this season. Recovering quickly from such a demoralising start, at least managed to stop the visitors adding a second shortly afterwards. Blocking a point-blank shot from an unmarked Eagle with his legs, he then reacted fastest to dive on the loose ball before it could be poked over the line.
One man's sacrifice is another man's opportunity, and young striker was given the chance to start up front alongside . After conceding the early goal, Logica battled back well to make life difficult for the ball-playing Bald men, and even force some pressure of their own. it was who carved out the best chance for himself, nicking the ball off a defender and seeing his low shot billow the side-netting.
The second half found the home side struggling more as they battled against a diagonal wind. All the play was in the Logica half, and the Eagles felt hard done by when another point blank volley was half blocked by , and hooked the ball clear just as it was crossing the line. But a second goal was not long in coming. A burst of pace down the right-flank left Logica defenders in his wake before the flying Eagle clipped a low cross back from the bye-line. It evaded 's reach, and a fellow Eagle just managed to force the ball over the line from close range despite a brave half-block from [0-2].
The Bald keeper was hardly troubled after the interval, with Logica's only two dangerous moments inspired by . The best home move of the game played the Logica midfielder away down the right, but his tempting low ball into the box failed to find a yellow boot. Later a fine series of elaborate dummies worked a yard of space from which to shoot, but his effort was too close to the keeper.
The Eagles added two more as a one-sided match progressed towards its inevitable conclusion. First a classic parting of the yellow sea gave an Eagle time and space to fire low past an exposed [0-3]. The Logica keeper was far more unlucky five minutes later when facing the same situation, his reflexes just managing to tip a fierce volley up onto the cross-bar. But as the ball cannoned back into play, it was an Eagle who managed to bundle the rebound into the unguarded net [0-4]. can only hope that his charges wake up in time for next week's vital visit to Fulham.
