[Double header match: see report of the first match.]
Logica had come into this vital double-header against Welham Athletic needing to win at least one of the back-to-back games to maintain a six-point cushion above the bottom club. The team had gambled all their efforts, and indeed energy, on bagging the first three points on offer, and a combination of brave defending, clinical finishing and some well-placed woodwork had seen them achieve this objective. It was a vital victory in the context of this whole, shambolic season.
A soggy stade and the vagaries of the fixture computer had meant that this was Logica's first game for a month. With many of the squad's regulars unavailable due to injury, child-birth, holiday or, as in the case of , suspension, the players drafted in by to save the day had not played for far longer. Match practice was at a premium, and Logica would be pushed to summon the energy needed for the second match, even if the urgings before-hand were that even a point now would be a huge bonus.
Opting again to play uphill into the wind for the first half, Logica actually looked far more in control than they had in the opening match. Now into his second match there, looked a natural at centre-half, and was seemingly on hand to break up every Welham attack. The home side's frustration at this continual stumbling block could be seen with the increasing number of times was being fouled as he brought the ball clear. The upshot was that stand-in keeper had little to do other than field a couple of long range efforts and amuse himself by coming out to flap at a couple of crosses.
But with half-time approaching, Welham pulled off a double-whammy to knock Logica out of their comfort zone. First a corner from the right was arrowed towards the near post. The Welham player's header was half blocked, but the ball dropped into the six-yard box and was swept home from point blank range [0-1]. Straight from the kick-off further disaster struck. The ball was funnelled back casually to , whose heavy legs meandered further back towards his own goal. Buoyant after taking the lead, Welham quickly dispossessed the Logica playmaker and the ball was moved to an unmarked forward who fired clinically just inside the right-hand post from the edge of the box [0-2].
Any hopes that Logica might have had of exploiting the slope and wind advantage in the second half were quickly dented as Welham added a third. The home side's most dangerous player was their left-winger and he again sped clear down that flank to the bye-line. His pull-back was slightly mis-hit, wrong footing Logica's covering defenders, and enabling a Welham forward to smash home the bobbling cross from six yards out [0-3].
To their credit, Logica did not give up and kept pushing forwards. They pulled a goal back when a long throw was neatly laid off by to his strike partner, and expertly swept the ball home from an acute angle [1-3].
Logica felt that one more goal would set the Welham nerves jangling, but legs were looking decidedly heavy now, and despite a brave effort, they couldn't really carve out the chances they needed. Their cause wasn't helped when pulled his hamstring, and the closest Logica came was a snap-shot from the edge of the box.
Indeed it was Welham who looked more likely to score as the clock ticked down. Their best chance came as Logica were outnumbered and the ball fell to an unmarked player fifteen yards out. The Athlete hit his volley hard and true, but was equal to the task, and dived sharply to his right to save.
So it was honours even at the final whistle with three points apiece. But would definitely have been the happier of the two managers as Logica maintained a six point lead over Welham, and also moved four points clear of Lansdown in the table. Given the number of big-names stars he had missing, the win in the first game was even more creditable, and may just save Logica's season.
