Match Report by Demi-Supremo, .
Logica found themselves competing in the first round of the Ron Le Beau trophy with the scheduled league fixture against Battersea City making way. The opponents were Fourth Division NBG [Natural Born Grafters] and after a slender defeat the week prior against Croydon Red Star, Logica were confident of securing their first win of the season.
The Supremi decided to stick with the same formation that had served them so well the week before. The starting line up however differed, with usual starters , and all missing. This meant demi-Supremo took on the role of holding midfielder, moving out of his right back comfort zone, with and starting in the full-back positions. started on the left side of midfield with the Supremi handing a first start to on the right. also made his Logica debut, although starting on the bench.
After a late kick off - NBG were the worst organised side we have faced in the admin department - the match finally got underway.
The first 15 minutes was scrappy but the positive signs were there when Logica started to get it down on the deck. The first clear chance fell to who smashed the ball passed the NBG keeper after a long through ball. The offside flag was dubious and late, but the score remained 0-0.
Logica were starting to play now and two further good chances followed soon after. The first again fell to who latched onto yet another ball over the top. The Logica midfielder looked destined to score but was a fraction too hesitant and a combination of a defender's sliding tackle, and a dive by the NBG keeper prevented him from slotting the ball home. The next was a corner swung in by , and rose the highest. A goal again seemed certain, but could only direct his header over.
Then the breakthrough and it could not have been scrappier! The ball bobbled around inside the opposition's 18-yard box and a first Logica shot had the keeper not doing the easy thing and picking it up, but punting it to , who in turn smashed the ball against the post. was sniffing around though, and he made no mistake [1-0].
Logica were now ahead but in typical fashion went to sleep on the re-start. Some poor defending let a NBG midfielder get a first time shot in. , though, was equal to it, flying to his right to turn the ball around the post.
On the half-hour Logica doubled their lead. A first time effort from found , who neatly headed the ball across the six yard box to . The Yorkshireman flung himself into a superb diving header and the ball was in the net [2-0].
After a stern chat to raise the tempo, Logica started the second half really well. The second goal had taken the wind out of the NBG sails, and ten minutes into the half Logica were three up. this time turned supplier after some good work by on the right hand side. The Sheffielder received the ball on the right, nipped past his defender before knocking the ball into the six-yard box from the bye-line for to slide in and touch the ball into the net [3-0].
Logica were now on top and knocking the ball about well. was merely a spectator and with breaking up NBG's attacks, any threat of a comeback was easily snuffed out by Logica. A fourth goal soon followed to wrap the game up for the visitors. again served as provider and pulled the ball back on the right hand side. It avoided , but coming in from the left was who stretched to knock the ball into the net and in doing so completing a sublime hat-trick [4-0].
With their ball safely in the hat for the second round draw, Logica made changes. made his debut on the left in place of , whilst also took a well earned rest to be replaced by .
Both and had played immense with special praise going to the hat-trick hero. Up front on your own can be a thankless task but it seems that has made the position his own, and after the game leads the Logica scoring charts with four so far this season. [It is only a thankless task if you don't thank him – Ed]
NBG mustered two chances for a consolation, the first being well saved by and the second when a corner was misjudged by the same man and clipped the bar. The entire back four were having a great game, with again outstanding, and Logica earned the bonus of a confidence-boosting clean sheet.
So after a two month wait the new Supremi finally got their first win of the season. They have now found a system that works and the side looks more confident with it. Even though the quality of the opposition was questionable, the desire by Logica could not be underestimated, especially from who had a faultless game. The squad also showed a bit of depth, with the new boys and impressing. The next round beckons!!
