Match Report by Demi-Supremo, .
With the Sportmans League having a gap in the programme [Technically referred to as an early Cup exit – Ed], Logica arranged a friendly with Kensington Athletic in Fulham. Training was put on hold as this test would surely be more beneficial. Kensington were two leagues above us, so it was a going to be a difficult game.
Logica started without a few first team regulars [, , , , and to be precise] so it was up to the newer faces to keep pushing for a starting place in the next league game. The away side started the game using the now favoured 4-5-1 formation who were now unbeaten in two.
The first half was bitty from both sides. The pitch was awful, so it was difficult getting the ball down, and crisp passes were bobbling around all over the place. Kensington then stepped up to the plate and their forward was denied by a good stop from , who was left exposed in a one-on-one situation.
was again fighting for everything in Logica's final third and it was he who had the first chance for the away side, firing just wide. , starting his first game in an unfamiliar right midfield position, forced a good save from the Kensington keeper. had found himself in a bit of space and his shot was on target - had it been hit cleanly, it would have surely been a goal.
The rest of the first half passed pretty much everyone by, with Kensington having the slightly better of the play. was having a sturdy game at left back and was on hand to clear up the rest.
Five minutes from half time our opponents took the lead. A ball over the back four left Athletic's tall striker free and, with caught in no-mans land, rounded the exposed keeper and rolled the ball into an empty net. A gallant attempt by to slide the ball off the line even went in vain [1-0].
Logica went in at half time unfortunate to be behind, and a change was made with first half referee replacing at right back. The visitors started the second half the better side with , and all working hard in midfield.
Then came the breakthrough. found himself chasing down some dodgy Athletic defending and, after fighting off a challenge, superbly smacked the ball low and wide of the keepers outstretched arm and into the far corner of the net [1-1].
Logica were now getting the ball down and passing it well. So it was a surprise when Kensington went ahead again. It was a corner that undid Logica, as the tall Athletic striker got his second of the game by rising highest to head the ball past [1-2].
As the clock ticked on, it was time to change things. gambled and reverted back to the traditional 4-4-2 formation that had served Logica so well in the past. , who had played well in the Makelele role, went to right midfield with joining up front. This change paid dividends as with five minutes to go, struck . The ball was swept in by and, having pulling away from his marker, hit a superb first time shot with his left peg that flew past the keeper, pinging off the near post and into the net [2-2].
It was no less than Logica deserved as the full time whistle blew. This useful workout leaves the gaffer with a possible selection headache in next week's league game against third bottom Maxilla West, a must-win game if Logica want to stay up. May the good run continue!!!
