Logica came into this game needing a win to have any chance of staying in Division 2. A mixture of poor results in 2008 and other results going criminally against saw them rooted to the bottom of the table without a league goal to their name in 2008. Their opponents were Welham who were just a point above them in the relegation zone. To say this was a relegation six-pointer would have been a major understatement.
The home side would start the game without five regulars: , , , , and were all absent. And after two drop-outs on Saturday night at 1am, Logica would start the game with just 10 men, and only mustered that total because and heroically agreed to play the full 90 minutes despite being only 50% fit [50% sounds quite impressive to me - Ed].
Despite Welham's numerical advantage, Logica started the better side. , , and were linking up well in the middle of the park, and after 10 minutes the home side created their first proper chance. , took on a Welham midfielder and sent a defence-splitting pass that freed . His shot however was easily gathered by the Welham keeper.
As the game settled, Welham began creating more room, particularly attacking Logica's left side with gusto. Their bearded midfielder rode two challenges, and from 18 yards out struck a shot that looped over and into the top corner [0-1]. The keeper would have been disappointed at letting such a harmless shot over him.
The home side kept their heads up and kept plugging away. However chances were few and far between and the only notable opening they created was a corner that whipped in towards the goal only for the Welham keeper to save well.
Logica then found themselves involved in a Royal Rumble style spot of handbags. The bearded geezer lashed out a kick towards after the Logica midfielder had cleanly won the ball. A bundle ensued, with as usual getting involved and leading away from the trouble. Both and Welham's midfielder were booked by the female ref after Welham's striker had pleaded with the ref to not send them off as "Logica would only have nine men".
As half time approached Logica were looking to re-group with a one goal deficit. Unfortunately this was not to be, as minutes before the interval they conceded a second. A fast cross from Welham's winger avoided everybody across the box and looked to be running out for a throw until swooped in and sliced a left footed scorcher past his co-gaffer [0-2].
Worse was to come in the second half, and just two minutes in mis-kicked, enabling Welham's midfielder to hit the ball past despite the keeper's best efforts, getting an outstretched leg to the shot but only diverting it into the net [0-3].
then showed up to make the teams at least even in numbers. Despite being 3-0 down, Logica continued to press and create chances. went close with a great effort that was well saved by Welham's keeper; found space and had his shot blocked; and had another great effort that the Welham number one was equal to.
As Logica committed men forward, two further goals added to the home side's woes [0-5]. Logica continued their goalless 2008, despite a 15-man scramble at Welham's end after a corner: looked to have got a touch but despite four attempts Logica could not find the net.
For those that turned up, the home side had played with 110% commitment and had never given up. It looks as though it is too late to save Logica from the drop - it is not mathematically impossible, but if and continue to struggle to get a first 11 out there each week it will never happen.
Logica can take some heart from this performance but need to win a fair few games and win them comfortably. The 'beatable' teams have beaten us, but Battersea, Maxilla West, and Spectra are the sides that we should really be looking to get points from. If we don't have a committed 14 each week this will never happen and if we had had a full squad today things may have been different. The players today showed great commitment and a big shout out must go to and who completed 90 minutes despite physically struggling all game. It might be a fair reminder to the fellows who would rather go out on the lash and cry off with 5 hours notice to what can be achieved if you are committed. It is a great shame...
