Logica continued their good form against a strong, pacey and confident South West Alliance side. Had the home side taken some of the excellent chances they carved out via some snappy passing football, the outcome may have been different. As it was, 's late penalty was a mere consolation goal, but at least the Supremi could console themselves that their charges had put in a highly competitive and, at times, accomplished display.
Like last week, another slow start allowed opponents to romp into a 2-0 lead before Logica had really got into the swing of things. Alliance were playing little triangles all over the pitch, and the home side struggled to keep up early doors. The game was only ten minutes old when extended visiting pressure was brought to bear: Logica failed to clear the danger, and a mis-hit shot never the less had enough direction to trundle into the far corner [0-1].
Logica slowly eased themselves into the match, but a lightning break from Alliance doubled their lead. A yellow attack foundered on the edge of the visiting box, and the ball was whipped quickly down the right flank. The speed of the break tempted both and across, leaving an unmarked Alliance player to receive a neat square pass and rifle into the roof of the net [0-2]. It might have been worse, but made a brilliant and agile interception, diving at the feet of an SWA forward trying to round him after being sent clear.
The rest of the half was Logica's as they really raised their game, and began to put more pressure on numbers eight and nine who had been running the show from the middle of the park thus far. Seeing more of the ball, Logica showed that they could play too, and as well as a couple of half chances, they created three clear cut openings before the interval.
First and played a series of neat one-two's down the right touchline, before the former slid the ball back into the midfielder's path. took his time, but the angle did him no favours and his shot across goal was parried before being scrambled clear. was again the provider as he slipped a neat ball into the path of a great run by , but his fellow striker stabbed his shot just wide as the keeper dived at his feet. More concerted pressure forced errors from the Alliance in possession. One such enabled the ball to be fed through to , and he was desperately unlucky to see his low shot across goal clip the outside of the far post.
The second half found Alliance dominating possession, but Logica's defence stuck impressively to their task and restricted the visitors to few clear openings. and in particular made some vital last-ditch tackles, and the hard-working defence was ably supported by a tireless midfield. There was little that could be done about the third Alliance goal midway through the half, however, as their brilliant number eight pinged a pin-point fifty yard pass along the ground right into his striker's stride. did well to get a touch on the firm low shot, but couldn't keep it out [0-3].
Alliance may have seen more of the ball, but Logica still had a cutting edge on the break. Neat build-up play saw the ball cushioned back to who fired just inches over the bar. alertly volleyed a poor goal kick to , but his attempt at a first time shot was woeful. Wisely opted to shoot himself a little later, showing great strength to turn his marker before firing a low shot that cannoned back off the base of the post.
Logica finally got the goal they deserved in the last few minutes. It was again down to the perseverance of , who chased and won possession before slipping the ball to his unmarked strike partner. turned away into the box and was just about to side-foot past the keeper when he had his heels clipped from behind. A stone-wall penalty, which the ageing forward converted himself, calmly sending the keeper the wrong way [1-3]. Its a bit like watching Geoffrey Boycott, as the old man inches interminably through the nervous one-hundred-and-nineties and is now just three short of his domestic double century.
The morale in the Logica dressing room was high afterwards, despite defeat. The home side had played some good football, and had run the Alliance all the way to the final whistle. New signing Joe Tallett was again impressive, and if they put in a similar performance next week against a very variable West London Select side, there is no reason why Logica can't add another three points to their meagre tally.
