Match Report by .
After a week of frantic calls slept soundly on Saturday night knowing that, despite no less than seven first team regulars absent, he would have a dozen men to fight for the Logica cause the following morning.
In came and to make their Logica debuts, thrown in at the deep end having barely had 10 minutes to get to know their new teammates. was a tall striker (something Logica had lacked over the years), with adding to the teams ever improving midfield gang.
It really was a side thrown together at the last minute, with a number of players starting out of position. was playing centre back, was stationed as midfield general, whilst accepted his central midfield duties and his fourth different position of the season with his usual gusto and enthusiasm.
The first half saw hardly any attacking chances from Logica despite their best efforts, and it was the home side that dominated from the off. Within the first twenty minutes Barneselona had already hit the woodwork twice, with their balding number 10 pulling the strings. As the game began to settle, the visitors improved, with anything dangerous coming through or , who put in a fine day's graft on the right flank. At the other end, though, Logica's defence was performing heroics with the entire back four snuffing out any danger, and despite the onslaught, the match remained goalless at the interval.
The legs were tiring in the second half and Barneselona's onslaught continued. Chance after chance was carved out but still Logica fought bravely on. But the inevitable did finally happen after just short of the hour mark. A Barnesolna striker found space on the edge of the box after a half cleared corner, and sent an effort over the out stretched arm of [0-1].
As is often the way, after Logica had held out gallantly for so long, once the defences had been breached a second goal followed soon after [0-2], although our junior reporter today can't remember what happenend! It must have been all the hollering.
Despite being two down Logica continued to rally, with and getting stuck in with the challenges. Barneselona's poor old number 10 had again hit the woodwork, and, not wanting to be out-done, went even closer than did last week when a well struck clearence clipped the outside of 's post. An own goal would have been harsh, for Logica's left back deputising at centre half had performed heroically alongside his more experienced partner .
However, the intervention of the woodwork had only delayed the inevitable. A third goal finally followed from a set piece, with misjudging the corner and leaving Barneslona's forward to head home [0-3]. To be fair to the nutjob, he was the first to apologise to his teammates and made amends shortly afterwards with a fine save, tipping yet another effort from the number 10 around the post.
Logica still persisted but had to make do with half chances from , and . The final nail in the coffin, however, was comical. The Barneselona forward was allowed a clear run on goal; his shot could only be parried by and the rebound was tapped home after the initial effort had got stuck in a puddle [0-4]. I think our poor defence thought it had already crossed the line.
To be honest, it was a relief when the ref blew for full time. Barneslona had been the better side, but it had been good to see 110% effort from every single player. Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say the better team won. The Logica team got an 'A' for effort at the end of this game from , and a well deserved break from the keeper's voice, with the gaffer quite literally trying to commentate on every single touch from a Logica player. You have to remember its only because he cares lads!
Note: After exiting Big Ron at the first hurdle, Logica now drop into the Little Ron Cup, and are drawn to play Tooting Bec Rovers from Division 5 in the second round on 30 November. This cup tie will replace the league fixture originally scheduled for this date against Worcester Park Rangers, who are in any case also playing a Little Ron cup tie themselves that morning.
