A highly unsatisfactory season reaches its climax for Logica on 15 April when they entertain Old Sergeant in what will almost certainly be their last game of the campaign. A bad run of form coupled with a pair of Division Two clubs folding now finds Logica in deep trouble. However, Old Sergeant now appear to be the only rock that stands between us and safety. Our destiny is in our own hands, and a victory in that final game would almost certainly see Logica clamber out of the relegation zone.

It is Welham Athletic that have best imitated their fellow Athletes from Charlton with a late season surge after all hope seemed lost. With no points at Christmas, the bookies had written them off. A New Year revival was then scuppered as their first six points were wiped out when first Danes (against whom they were awarded three free points) and then Portman (whom they beat 4-1) threw in the towel. But they did not lose heart, picking up a point against SW Alliance, and then sharing six points with us.

But it was the following Sunday that saw them climb out of the relegation zone courtesy of a remarkable haul of six points against two different opponents. Their scheduled match was conceded in advance by Kew Green, and they promptly rearranged a game against Old Sergeant whom they beat 5-3. With Logica losing 5-0 at Spectra that same morning, Welham edged above us courtesy of having scored more goals (not difficult).

Kew Green seem to have given up the ghost at the end of a second season in Division Two that has seen them increasingly struggle. They have now conceded their last three games, and although the reasons are not clear, it is perhaps surprising that they too have not folded. However, the bad news is that Welham are scheduled to play Kew Green on the Sunday after Easter, and that will almost certainly mean three free points. Ironically, Logica still have an unscheduled game against Kew Green, but precedent suggests we are unlikely to be awarded the points for such a fixture unless Kew actually fold.

Welham have one further game scheduled against Charing Cross, who, although challenging for promotion at one point, have fallen away badly and lost all three matches since they beat us in a double header. If Welham were to beat Cross, then we would have no chance of catching them (assuming we play no further matches). If they lose, then a convincing victory for Logica could see us jump back above Welham on goal difference: the margin of our victory plus the margin of Welham's defeat would have to be greater than five.

However, the up side of Kew's apparent demise is that a victory over Old Sergeant would see us move a point above Green, who currently have 12 points to our 10. And if we were to win by twelve goals or more, we'd also nip above our opponents on goal difference.

We have had a little more luck beneath us. Lansdown, four points behind us after the Welham matches, have put in two bold performances since then, narrowly losing 4-3 to both the top tow teams, Fulham and then Varsovia. They currently have just one further scheduled match, but even if they beat SW Alliance they would still only have nine points, one less than we currently have. Our outstanding fixture against Lansdown currently looks unlikely to be played.

So despite a certain amount of hypothesing, it seems clear that our destiny is still in our own hands. A victory against Old Sergeant should be enough to see Logica move out of the bottom two in the table and avoid automatic relegation, regardless of what happens elsewhere. Further defeats for Welham and OS in other matches (the latter are also scheduled to play Varsovia and Sands End in April) may even impact goal differences sufficiently to see us move higher.

So it can only hoped that the Supremo is able able to raise a strong team for this final game, and that Logica can secure the three points that would at least see a very disappointing and frustrating season end on a high.
