Whilst Logica have been oscillating between victory and defeat with metronomic precision, Broadway have achieved consistency of a more desirable nature. That description perhaps doesn't do their early season form justice, for they have blazed a Chelsea-esque trail that has seen them win their first four matches, scoring 25 goals in the process, and tempting a number of bookies to stop taking bets on the Division Two title outcome.
Such predictions are a tad premature, as Arsenal fans will doubtless concur. When last we spoke, Broadway had already won three games, including an 8-0 demolition of Logica, to go top of the table. The next fortnight would, it seemed, reveal whether they were genuine contenders as they faced the third and second placed teams on successive Sundays. Any doubts were emphatically erased when they thrashed Kew Green 5-1 with a clinical second half display of the goalscoring arts, and only the postponement of last Sunday's game with second placed Bald Eagles stopped them opening up a sizable gap at the top of the table.
That as yet unexplained postponement was probably greeted with relief by the Eagles. Despite also winning their first three games, their results had been far less convincing, and suspicions about their frailty had been confirmed the week before when the Eagles were held to an entertaining 4-4 draw by the SW Dragons. As well as putting our win over them into a more favourable light, this point was enough to move the Dragons off the bottom of the table, leaving the pointless Invictus alone in last place. The ironically monikered outfit had lost narrowly to Notting Hill (3-2) but were then soundly beaten 4-1 by relegated Fulham Utd to leave them with five defeats out of five.
For their part, Notting Hill are starting to establish their own promotion credentials after a cautious start that saw them draw their first two games. That win over Invictus was followed up with an impressive 2-1 win over Kew Green, leaving them unbeaten and handily placed in fourth spot. Kew's promising start to the season seems to have stalled, their two league defeats perhaps triggered by a surprise 5-3 defeat to Third Division Wessex Rangers in the Big Ron Cup. We can only hope this crisis continues for another couple of weeks until we visit them at the Riverside.
The other form team are Logica's conquerors on Sunday, West Six. They had preceded their 3-1 win over us with a 6-1 drubbing of Spectra, and these two wins were enough to move them up to third spot, just three points behind Broadway. For their own part, Spectra are struggling to recreate their promotion challenging form of last season, and a 2-2 draw against Welham (whom Logica had thumped 4-0 the Sunday before) left then in a lowly tenth place.
All of which leaves the erratic Logica with plenty to play for. Despite the West Six defeat dropping us to 8th spot, we are only three points behind our victors who are third. Our hastily rearranged league match against Atlas Lions this coming Sunday gives us a great chance haul ourselves into a challenging position whilst everyone else is in Cup action. The Lions have a similar record to ourselves, a narrow 3-2 win over Fulham a fortnight ago giving them two wins to go with their two defeats and a draw. The game will not be easy (for their are no such games at this level), but the Lions are clearly beatable, and we must ensure that the pendulum swings back fully and gives us another away win.
