After the previous week's end of season celebrations, this was an unexpected fixture on a Bank Holiday, but a hastily assembled squad put up a stirring battle and made Supercala fight every inch of the way before finally confirming the Second Division title via a couple of late goals. The makeshift nature of the team was emphasised by the complete lack of central defenders, and it was two midfielders that unselfishly offered to fill the breach. That this pair were the only players to receive MoM votes this week is a testament to their heroic displays that repelled most of what the Champions could muster.
It was debutante Jon Hall who finally ran away with what, for one week only we have decided to rename the Jamie Carragher MoM Award, with three quarters of an enthusiastic electorate's votes. The Supremo was grateful enough that he (along with Matt McShane and Mark Carter) had agreed to help us out at such short notice, but Groom was almost on his knees in gratitude when Hall agreed to play at the back. Despite some pre-match uncertainty, it was quickly apparent that Hall was a fine and intelligent footballer, adapting quickly to his new role and sorting out a partnership with the ever-impressive Suranga Fernando in no time at all.
It was the newcomer's astute reading of the game that enabled him to make a string of timely interceptions, no-nonsense challenges, as well as a fair few headed clearances, which along with a strong performance from his fellow centre-half, saw Supercala increasingly subdued until a goal out of the blue reinvigorated them. One can only hope that Hall might consider making a few reappearances for the rossoneri next season. One can only imagine how good he might be in his rightful position...
