On the whole, this was a very disappointing season which ultimately resulted in Logica’s second consecutive relegation. The team only achieved four victories all season, and two of these were against divisional whipping boys, Oakwood, who ended the season bottom of the pile having lost all 16 of their matches whilst conceding 88 goals in the process.
As the defeats piled up, enthusiasm waned, and over-worked Supremo had enormous difficulties getting eleven players together on a Sunday morning. At one point we played a game with ten players, the next with nine, and then had to concede the next match as only eight players turned up. Unfortunately this last game was a double-header against Aldwych. Worse, we played a friendly against them in lieu of the competitive four-pointer, and beat them comfortably. They weren’t very good at all - four points down the drain.
The dip in enthusiasm is evident from the number of players used throughout the season - a total of 35 in just 16 matches. Of these, eleven players played just one match, which included a number of players’ mates who turned up to help out. Only seven players played in ten or more games.
One player, however, shone brightly amidst all this gloom. , already a Logica FC veteran of some fourteen seasons or more, started every one of the sixteen matches the club played during the season. Not only that, he notched a magnificent 16 goals during the campaign, thus averaging a goal a game. Significantly, scored eight goals in the four games that Logica won, two more in one of Logica’s drawn games, as well as playing in goal and keeping a clean sheet in our other draw, 0-0 against Vasco de Gama. It is not an exaggeration to say that played a significant part in acquiring all our points during the season!
Yet another first round Cup-exit also proved a huge disappointment. It was not just the early exit from the competition, but the manner of defeat that reduced morale even further. In one of their better 45 minutes of football, Logica raced to a 3-0 lead over Eurocelts courtesy of an impressive hat-trick by . But the usual second half hoodoo struck, and Logica contrived to concede four goals before surprisingly bouncing back to equalise through with just a few minutes left. This flicker of life served only to prolong the agony, as three further Eurocelts goals in extra time made the final score 4-7.
The league season showed the same kind of late rally that proved eventually fruitless. The season started in positive vain as we trounced Oakwood by 6-2, oblivious at that point as to just how poor our opponents really were. Reality kicked back in via three straight defeats, before another hard-earned point came our way in the goalless draw against Vasco that took two Spences to achieve (Kev’s brother Stephen getting more than he bargained for during a family visit south of the border).
This result boosted confidence, as the team went on to beat Battersea Town 5-2 the following week. and scored goals in what was a good all-round team performance. Unfortunately the brilliant left-footed became somewhat disillusioned at the general lack of points and players, and only played the first five games of the season.
This victory was followed up with a 4-4 draw against West London Utd. Although another point to add to our collection, this was a match we really should have won as we took the lead four times against poor opposition. After putting up an impressive display in the 3-1 defeat by table-topping CMR Reserves, Logica lost that dramatic cup-tie against Eurocelts, and this was the trigger for a dramatic loss of form. A run of six straight defeats plus the award of two defeats in the conceded match against Aldwych, left the team well adrift in the relegation zone, with only Oakwood for support.
The only consolation in this terrible run was a gallant nine-man effort against Racing Club. At one point Logica pulled the score back to 2-3 and looked capable of pulling off the impossible before two breakaway Racing goals killed us off. This game saw the debut of , and luckily for Logica this dispiriting experience didn’t deter the talented midfielder, who went on to be appointed Head Coach under (who also made his Logica bow in the following game, a 4-2 defeat against Champions CMR).
Further bad news came with the predictable folding of both Battersea Town and West London Utd. Clearly unable to live with themselves after failing to beat Logica, they quickly jacked it in. This meant that Logica lost three vital points from those games back in October, and the future looked bleak indeed.
A flicker of hope arrived with a heroic 6-4 defeat of Eurocelts in which scored his second hat-trick of the season, and also scored his first goal for the club. The result offered some revenge for our tragic Cup exit before Christmas, and also hope for the return league match which was played four weeks later. However, despite two more goals from , Logica lost 4-3 in a game they never looked like winning. After that, even a 5-0 demolition of sorry Oakwood in our final match of the season could do nothing to alter our fate. The axe fell, and Logica were relegated to Division Two. So distraught were the team, that they didn't even bother to pose for the annual team photo.
Apart from ’s one man show, there were a few other promising signs. A young, pacey striker called was improving fast in his second season, as a haul of five goals in eleven games indicates. There was also two substitutes appearances late in the season for a young Norfolk lad called . He claimed to have joined the company solely seduced by the prospect of the Logica World Cup. It was clear that the lad would go far.
